MAT Harvest

Rain has eluded us for a while in Michigan and Chief Meteorologist Ryan Martin says that changes on Friday in his Seed Genetics Direct Harvest Weather Forecast. Some light moisture on Friday will prime the atmosphere ahead of another round of moisture coming soon.

“I don’t think it’s any more than a quarter to three quarters of an inch, but it will have a wonderful effect for the atmosphere ahead of our next weather system that’s going to be showing up not too long after. I do think that we squeeze out a mostly dry Saturday here over the region and a dry start to Sunday before our next big weather system starts to work in Sunday late afternoon and evening.”

And that big weather system is coming in from Iowa, Minnesota, and Wisconsin before hitting us here in Michigan, and Martin says it could be a doozy.

“That’s going to push moisture in here overnight Sunday night through Monday, rain and thunderstorms will be rather substantial, and we see a long tail of this, another secondary surge for Monday night into and through Tuesday. Combined over the two days, I think half to two-inch rainfall totals are going to be pretty standard over 100% of Michigan. So, this will put an end to the dryness for a little while. With the dry conditions that we have, though, I think this moisture soaks in relatively quickly, and it does not create long delays for harvest.”

The quick return to the field is because Martin’s forecast calls for sunny, pleasant, and dry weather beginning Wednesday and running through Sunday the 29th with high evaporation rates.

“Looking farther west, there are a few areas of instability trying to pop up, but nothing well organized. Our next weather system probably does not come together until we get into that first full week of October.”
