Dry beans and sugar beets are important crops to many farmers throughout the Thumb and Saginaw Valley.  To maximize efficiency, growers work to minimize inputs while still providing essential nutrients and managing yield-reducing diseases, pests, and weeds. MSU Extension Specialists and representatives of the MSU Plant & Pest Diagnostics services, Michigan Bean Commission, and Michigan Sugar Company will lead participants in hands-on training and interactive demonstrations related to the diagnosis and detection of prevalent pest, disease, and fertility concerns. Topics will include: herbicide injury, insect pests, nutrient deficiencies, weed and nematode identification, beet diseases, and bean diseases. The Diagnostic Day is ideal for training new or newer industry members in current pest and management concerns.

Unlike a traditional field day pre-registration is required and limited to 125 attendees. We aim to organize smaller groups of participants to promote one-on-one interactions between specialists and attendees to optimize the effectiveness of planned interactive activities and demonstrations.
